Severe Weather Update - Rainfall Event

Posted by Nelson Tasman Civil Defence on 24 March 2016

Summary:

Significant rainfall overnight has caused flooding to parts of the Tasman District.

Flooding has occurred in the Riwaka township area, with a small number of homes being evacuated due to the Riwaka River flooding. Police and the fire service are assisting affected residents. Residents are being directed initially to the carpark of the Riwaka Hotel.

A Civil Defence Centre is on standby in Motueka to be opened if required. The Civil Defence response team is onsite at Riwaka to assist emergency services.

A helicopter has been arranged by Tasman District Council for first light to survey the effects of the rain.
SH60 has been closed at Riwaka, and also between Upper Takaka and Collingwood due to the flooding.

The weather forecast is for rain easing and the situation is expected to improve this morning.

Flooding on the North Branch of the Riwaka River has been a 50 year event. Flooding on the South Branch of the Riwaka River has been a 20 year event.  Rivers appear to have peaked but will take some time to flow through.

The regional Civil Defence Emergency Operations Centre is monitoring the situation and coordinating with emergency services.

Calls to Councils may increase with daylight hours, once people are able to see damage or impacts. Please be patient if there are delays getting through. If there is an emergency situation then please call 111.

Severe Weather Warning - Heavy Rainfall 17 January 2016

Posted by on 17 January 2016

Summary:

Severe Weather Warning

Heavy rainfall forecast for Nelson
Sunday 17 January 2016. 12:00pm. Release 001

MetService has issued a Severe Weather Warning which includes the areas of Nelson and the Richmond Ranges. The warning is for a period of significant and intense heavy rain, which is expected from midday Monday into Tuesday, with 100 to 180mm likely to accumulate in a 15 to 18 hour period.

A low pressure system over the Tasman Sea is expected to move across the region, bringing with it significant periods of rain in a very humid northerly flow.

The heavy rain is expected from midday Monday through to 3am Tuesday. It is forecast that 100 to 150mm is likely to accumulate in the ranges, while 50 to 90mm could accumulate in some lower lying areas. Maximum rainfall intensities of 25 to 35 mm/hr from Monday night.

This amount of rain will cause streams and rivers to rise rapidly, slips and surface flooding, and could make driving conditions hazardous.

It is recommended that people be prepared for this heavy rainfall and be vigilant, especially around rivers and streams.
